General Comments on Feeding PoultryWhat is a balanced ration? A balanced ration is the 24 hour allowance of feed or a mixture of feeds that can provide all the nutrients in the correct amount. As I mentioned before, when we feed poultry, we need to feed higher quality diets. Number one: cost. As I mentioned before, since feed represents over 70% of the cost, we have to make sure we get good quality feeds. Our goals are also different. Goals of meat production, profit, good quality, good external as well as internal quality. Gut size, again as I mentioned, small gut size with minimal amount of feed, for example, 90-110 grams of feed in laying birds. We have to make sure that that it is properly balanced with all the nutrients. There is always research into new feed ingredients that can provide the optimum nutrition for birds at all stages of growth. And remember, there is not a single true value for requirements. Requirements change, depends upon the age of the bird, depends upon stage of growth, depends upon the type of condition it's being raised, depends upon the market for it's being raised. There’s great bird to bird variation. We have to take into account all these things when we formulate ration for poultry. |
