Feed and Water Requirements and Feed ProcessingHere’s just some general facts about swine production, in general. Feed. It is going to require about 350 pounds of feed per hundred pounds of pork you actually get from your pig. So, if you take a pig to market at about 250 pounds, translates into around 800 pounds of feed per pig. If you look at how much water you’re going to need to support this type of an operation, two to three pounds of water for every pound of feed consumed. You can imagine what the environmental impact of a large pork producer, what impact they have on the surrounding area. Feed processing. I kind of alluded Monday, that feed for swine operations are highly processed. This kind of illustrates the point that you have to grind the feed to a certain size. Once you have ground, you will mix your feedstuffs into the ration and then you will pellet it. And the reason they go to the trouble of pelleting the diets are gain and utilization is usually greater on a pelleted diet. I am not sure I could really offer a good explanation for that other than a pelleted diet is probably going to be less dusty than a less processed feed, or less processed ration, so you are going to have less respiratory problems. |
