Additional High-Energy Feedstuffs

A large number of additional high-energy feedstuffs are fed to animals. Many of the additional feeds are by-products of the human food industry or feed industry. The by-products available will vary by location. The course will not attempt to cover all these high-energy feedstuffs. However, various publications stating high-energy by-product feedstuffs are available. The quality of the data describing nutritional value of these additional products is variable. It is recommended to perform a nutritional analysis prior to feeding the by-product.

In the Pacific Northwest, a common feedstuff is cannery waste. Refuse fruits and vegetables such as onions, squash, apples, and pears are fed to animals. Generally, these products are good sources of energy. Typically, these products are fed to ruminants. As with any other feedstuff, it is important to understand the specific attributes of the feed including nutritional and feeding value and presence of deleterious compounds prior to feeding.
