By-Product Dry Feeds

Beet pulp is the first by-product dry feed to discuss. Beet pulp is the by-product of sugar production from sugar beets. Beet pulp is available as wet and as dry beet pulp. The majority of beet pulp fed is dry beet pulp. To improve processing and feeding characteristics, beet molasses may be added to the pulp prior to drying. Dried beet pulp is available shredded or pelleted.

Figure 5.9 illustrates dried beet pulp in the pelleted form.

The average nutritional composition of dried beet pulp is 20.1% crude fiber, 64.3% nitrogen free extract, and 9.7% crude protein. Beet pulp is a good source of energy and also functions as a roughage. Beet pulp is a favorable roughage source because the fiber is relatively digestible. Beet pulp is digestible by both ruminants and nonruminants. In addition, beet pulp is a palatable feed. Beet pulp is primarily used in dairy and beef cattle rations.

The next by-product dry feeds are citrus pulp and citrus meal. Citrus pulp and citrus meal are the by-products of juice production from citrus fruits. The pulp consists of the peel, pulp, and seeds. The meal consists of the smaller particles from screening the dried pulp. Nutritionally, citrus pulp and meal are relatively high in energy and also contain digestible fiber. The average nutrient composition is 5-8% crude protein and 11-12% crude fiber. The products may contain a large amount of calcium. Citrus pulp and meal are most useful as a ruminant feed.

The next by-product is dried bakery product. Dried bakery product consists of unused bakery products and other human foods high in nonstructural carbohydrates. The various foods are blended and ground to make bakery product. Dried bakery product is a high energy feedstuff. The product is high in nonstructural carbohydrates such as starch and sucrose and high in fat. The average crude protein concentration is 9-12% crude protein. The fiber content is low. The nutritional value will vary with the specific ingredients in the product. Dried bakery product is a very palatable feed. Dried bakery product is useful in both ruminant and nonruminants rations.

Dried cassava meal is another by-product dry feed. As cassava is a root, cassava meal will be discussed with roots and tubers.
