Rice and MilletRiceIn the U.S., rice is grown primarily for human consumption. Generally, rice is a not a cost-effective feedstuff for the animal industry. If unprocessed rice is available at a feasible cost, rice can be used as an animal feedstuff. The average nutrient composition for unprocessed rice is 8.0% crude protein, 8.8% crude fiber, and 1.7% ether extract. Rice hulls will be present as approximately 25% of the weight. Rice hulls are high in silica and also indigestible. More commonly, rice bran is fed. The average nutrient composition of rice bran is 14.0% crude protein, 12.7% crude fiber, 44.6% NFE, and 15.2% ether extract. The nutritional value of rice is similar to corn, with the exception of a lower energy content. MilletIn the U.S., millet is a relatively unimportant feed grain. The feeding value of millet is between the feeding value of oats and corn. |
