Ecological Footprint Poster Instructions

I strongly recommend that this assignment option be taken only by students with a working knowledge of and access to PowerPoint software. Creating a Poster with PowerPoint will help you adapt PowerPoint software to this use. If you choose the poster option, start working on this assignment as early in the term as you can. That way, if you find you that it is taking you too long to create a poster, you still have time to switch to the paper option.

Before starting this assignment, read pdf pages 9-14 of the Ecological Footprint of Nations (If you want to print this reading, remember to specify the pdf page numbers or you'll get the whole document!) and take the online Ecological Footprint Quiz.

Then create a poster that visually (and verbally) describes your ecological footprint. This is a creative assignment, so there are many different ways you could go about it. The following questions might help spark your imagination, but don't feel limited by them.

  • What are the relative sizes, in biologically productive acres, of the lifestyle categories (Food, Shelter, Mobility, Goods/Services) in your ecological footprint?
  • Where does your footprint land? In other words, what countries/ecosystems/species are impacted by your ecological footprint?
  • How many planets would it take to support a world population where everyone lived like you?
  • How much of the planet do you think should be set aside for other species? [Check out What about other species? under Comments and Questions to help you think about this question.]
  • What steps could you take to reduce your ecological footprint? [Check out the Take Action Calculator linked to the What You Can Do<Individual website.]
  • How does your current footprint compare with one where you have.
    • taken steps to lessen your impact,
    • moved into a larger home,
    • become a vegetarian,
    • adopted the Atkins diet,
    • started taking mass transit,
    • moved to another country,
    • etc., etc., etc.

Posters will be graded using the following criteria:

  • Demonstrates an understanding of ecological footprint analysis
  • Illustrates key aspects of student's own ecological footprint
  • Reflects an engagement with the ecological footprint web resources
