Use information from Chapter 5 in Society & Technological Change and the ideas in this lecture to help answer the following question during your group discussions for Week 4:
As Volti mentions on page 73, cellular telephones have "leapfrogged" around the world because they don't require expensive infrastructure in poor countries. What this means is that there areas in the world where people still live at a subsistence level and clean drinking water is hard to come by, but the people can talk to other people all over the world. What
are the consequences for their cultures when this happens? How might cultures
(values, norms, attitudes, beliefs) in these so-called Third World nations
be affected by the presence of this very modern technology? I'm
interested in seeing your understanding of the concept of culture in the
answers so make use of the resources above in your discussions.

Each graded comment should be 100 to 300 words. One graded comment per
Unit is intended as a bare minimum. Of course you may linger in the discussion
boards and enter as many comments as you like. Incidentally, you may enter "extra" comments
under the same topic. That is what makes discussion and interaction possible.
Participation in each week's discussion is worth up to 10 points plus an
additional 10 if you are the Group Leader for that week.
