| Description | Tail <50% length of body, body round and stout. Dorsum is tannish-gray. |
| Skull Characteristics | M3 and m3 long and narrow. Phenacomys: 3 loops of enamel on lingual side of M3. Contrast Microtus: look at tail, M3, and reentrant angles on molariforms of lower jaw, to distinguish from Microtus montanus, which looks very similar. |
