Habitat Generalist - arctic tundra to forest, prairie, and arid landscapes. Highly social and territorial.
Description Largest of all wild canids, larger and more muscular than C. latrans, with a broader muzzle. Colors vary white to brown to black. The tail of a coyote hangs nearly to the ground, while a wolf's legs are longer relative to its tail.
Skull Characteristics Large, heavy skull. Prominently lobed incisors (as do other in genus Canis). Postorbital process strongly convex on dorsal surface. Width of canine >11 mm, broader rostrum relative to C. latrans. Palate ends ~even with posterior margin of last molar (cp. C. latrans).
