Diet Carnivorous, omnivorous. Primarily small mammals, also deer (fawns). Scavenge carrion, human trash, fruits, vegetables. Opportunistic.
Habitat Adaptable, including suburban, agricultural, and urban settings. Very vocal, frequently heard barking and howling.
Description Muzzle long and slender, ears large compared to head. Smaller and more slender than C. lupus, less variation in color, less likely to form packs. Tail tip often dark, hangs nearly to the ground (C. lupus tail does not hang so low). Very vocal, frequently heard barking and howling.
Skull Characteristics Lighter with thinner canines than wolf. Incisors lobed, like wolves. Postorbital slightly convex on dorsal surface. Palate ends at anterior edge or midpoint of last molar (compare C. lupus).
