Diet Carnivorous, omnivorous. Small mammals, birds, insects, fruit, carrion
Habitat Northern hemisphere; many habitats including farmland and urban areas. Widest distribution of any carnivore in world.
Description White-tipped tail; feet/legs often black. Largest of the Vulpes sp. Reddish color, but may also be gray or black.
Skull Characteristics Temporal ridges weakly developed (<1 mm wide) and forms a V. Angle of the jaw does not have a notch. (cp. U. cineroargenteus). All foxes: Postorbital process concave.
Notes Red foxes from Europe were introduced in some locations in North America, so there are both native and non-native populations.
