Common Brown bear, grizzly bear
Diet Omnivorous. May hunt large mammals. Some depend on salmon.
Habitat Western Canada and Alaska, northern Rockies. Open areas such as tundra, meadows, and coastlines. Extirpated from Oregon.
Description Face concave, short round ears, shoulder hump. Large, may stand 8 feet tall upright. Usually brown, but ranges from cream to nearly black. May have white-tipped hairs, “grizzled”.
Skull Characteristics Large sagittal and lamboidal crests, varies with age and gender. Nasofrontal region concave. M2 (last molar) >150% length of M1, usually widest in front of tooth.
