Description Horses have a single hoof on each foot, and a long loose mane and tail. Introduced by Europeans, but horses and burros are protected and managed under the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act. Approx. 37,000 wild horses and burros on BLM rangelands in 10 states in 2009. Horses were native to North America until they went extinct about 10,000 years ago, along with many other large mammal species.
Skull Characteristics Horses have both upper and lower incisors, males may have small canines. They have a diastema between front teeth and molariforms, which are hypsodont. Alisphenoid canal present, unlike Artiodactyls.
