Common northern elephant seal
Diet Cephalopods, fish, sharks, and skates. Feed near or on the bottom of the ocean.
Habitat Off-shore islands and shorelines of the Pacific Ocean from Gulf of Alaska to Baja California. 90% of time is spent at sea. Can dive up to 600 m on average, with record depths of over 1500 m for 20 to 70 minutes.
Description Male is largest of all pinnipeds. Strongly sexually dimorphic, males much larger with inflated proboscis and considerably larger canines.
Skull Characteristics 2 upper incisors, 1 lower incisor; cheek teeth are simple pegs. Adult male skull is much larger and more massive than female.
