Target Heart Rate Calculation

Use the following worksheet to find a range representing 55%-85% of heart rate reserve (HHR), which represents a safe and effective exercise intensity. You will be practicing taking an exercise heart rate and RPE in Lab 7.

Calculate manually

Resting Heart Rate (RHR): _________ beats per minute (bpm)

Predicted Max Heart Rate (MHR): 220 - age = MHR

Heart Rate Reserve (HRR): MHR - RHR = HRR

Target Heart Rate Range = (55% of HRR to 85% of HRR)

55% of HRR = (HRR x .55) + RHR = bpm (lower end of range)

85% of HRR = (HRR x .85) + RHR = bpm (upper end of range)

Target Heart Rate Range (THR) = (lower end of range bpm) to (upper end of range bpm)

THR as 10-second HR counts = (lower end of range ÷ 6) to (upper end of range ÷ 6)

Target Heart Rate Calculator

Enter your age and Resting Heart Rate in the indicated boxes and click the Calculate button. The calculator will figure your Maximum Heart Rate and Target Heart Rate per minute for you.

These calculations will not give you the same result as the manual calculations. They are only an estimate.
