The nonprofit sector is typically "off the radar screen," or
imperceptible to large portions of the American
public. "The nonprofit sector of American life . . includes an incredible
range and variety of activities and institutions -- from soup kitchens
to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, from churches to hospitals, from the
Girl Scouts to scientists studying DNA. It is the arena in which we fulfill
our religious needs, serve our compassionate impulses, express our creativity
in art and science, engage in citizen political action, and pursue our
powerful urges toward education and health care. And much more" (John
Gardner in Salamon, xiii). This section describes the nonprofit sector
by demographics, taxonomy and regulation. The full range on voluntary
action is viewed.
