Study Questions

  1. Think about how power and affluence may effect which societal problems get the most money and attention. Why have some of the organizations listed above been so successful at raising money?
  2. How do you maintain the autonomy of nonprofit organizations if the federal government provides a significant part of the funding for nonprofits? How might President Bush's initiatives for federal funding for faith-based organizations effect their autonomy? You can find out about the President's "faith-based initiative" by searching web-based news sources.
  3. Should the National Football League be considered a nonprofit organization? The NFL pays its commissioner $1.5 million per year and leases seven floors on Park Avenue in Manhattan. It has a $35 million annual budget but pays no taxes. The NFL spends less than 1% of its budget on charitable activities? What can the NFL example tell us about the boundaries which define the nonprofit sector?
