'love for mankind.' It was never meant to apply only to donors of
thousands or millions of dollars."

A common definition of giving is the expression of love, trust, friendship,
encouragement, sympathy, help, or advice. It is a way of expressing goodwill
toward others through service. But there are other ways to think about
gifts and other terms which help to shade the meanings of a gift. In this
section you will be introduced to the concepts of Potlatch,
favors, presents, tax-deductible gifts, gifts to strangers, charity, donations,
and philanthropy. Students will also be introduced to the definition of
altruism.
