Lecture Summary

In this section we examine the concepts of altruism and self-interest as the motivations for giving.

Altruism is defined by various disciplinary approaches and a applicable definition of the term is given.

The self-interested extrinsic and intrinsic benefits of giving are also identified. Students will apply their understanding of these concepts to characters in the readings.
