Official Description
Polynomial equations and inequalities, polynomial functions and graphs, inverse functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, elementary mathematical modeling and applications.
Prerequisite
MTH 095 or equivalent high school preparation.
Course Attributes
Core, Skills, Math, 4 credits
Course Description
Students are responsible for reading the material in the textbook and working all problems assigned in this web site (or paper study guide, if you bought one). Testing is done by arrangement with the instructor. There are 3 quizzes worth 50 points each (90 minutes each) and a final exam worth 100 points (2 hours) . In addition, the homework notebook will be worth 50 points. The final exam is given in a proctored setting without the use of books.

Objectives

At the completion of this course students will be able to:

  1. Use a variety of techniques to solve various types of equations (Linear, Quadratic, Polynomial, Absolute Value, Rational, Radical, Exponential, and Logarithmic).
  2. Solve a variety of types of inequalities (Linear, Quadratic, Absolute Value, and Rational).
  3. Understand the concept of “function” and find a function ’s domain and range.
  4. Understand the relationships between a function and its graph and determine and understand the significance of the special attributes of the graphs of each type of function we study.
  5. Determine the sum, difference, product, quotient, and composition of two functions and determine their domains.
  6. Understand the relationship between a function and its inverse and find the inverse of a given function.
  7. Understand and apply the identities for the exponential and logarithmic functions.
  8. Solve application problems and model real world situations with the various types of functions studied.
