Description

HHS 231, Lifetime Fitness for Health, is a two-credit, required baccalaureate core course for all students at Oregon State University. The course partially fulfills the health and fitness requirement for students and is designed to encourage personal awareness and responsibility for the maintenance of health, physical and mental well-being. Through weekly online lectures, assigned readings, and discussion questions students will expand their existing knowledge base of health and wellness. The required textbook for the course, Wellness: Choices for Health and Fitness, outlines the topics that are covered during the term. The first seven units are spent learning about general wellness, aspects of fitness, injuries, nutrition, and weight management. During the second five units students will be learn about health issues such as psychological wellness, addictions, and chronic diseases. Students' learning of lecture material will be assessed through three quizzes, a cumulative final exam, and four participation activity assignments.

Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of basic health, fitness, and wellness principles
  2. Establish an interest in continuing a health and fitness program through self assessment, goal-setting, and behavior change exercises
  3. Apply the concepts of a safe and effective health and fitness program

Course Content

The course will provide instruction on the role of physical activity and health behaviors in the well being of the human body. Specific topics of instruction over the 12 units will include an introduction to wellness and fitness, aerobic and muscular fitness, flexibility and back health, exercise related injuries, wellness diet, body composition and weight management, psychological wellness, stress, addictive behavior, AIDS and STI's, and chronic disease.

The quizzes will consist of 10 multiple-choice and true/false questions and the exam will consist of 40 multiple-choice and true/false questions. The majority of the course grade will come from objective evaluations, including three quizzes (20 points each) and a final exam (40 points). The remaining portion of the grade will come from participation in discussion groups (2.5 points each) for a total of 120 possible points for the course. The grading scale is as follows:

A 93-100 % A- 90-92 % B+ 87-89 %
B 83-86 % B- 80-82 % C+ 77-79 %
C 73-76 % C- 70-72 % D+ 67-69 %
D 63-66 % D- 60-62 % F 59 > %

You may elect to be graded on a Satisfactory-Unsatisfactory (S-U) basis instead of the traditional letter grading (A-F). A grade of S (satisfactory) is equivalent to a grade C- or above. Please refer to the University catalog for last date to change grade option.
