Introduction
We all practice literally hundreds of behaviors on a daily basis and use many different products and substances to sustain and enhance our lives. For most of us, the variety and access we have to these resources is part of the American dream, but for some, these wants and needs can become problematic. Fortunately, most behaviors we practice and substances we use do not lead to abuse and addiction. No one sets out to be an addict, but if the combination of personal factors and characteristics of the substance or behavior are right, the end product may be abuse or addiction. In this chapter we will learn about substance abuse and the process of addiction. We will learn how to recognize abusive strategies for overcoming abusive and addictive behaviors are included to help us work towards our wellness goals.
