Order EULIPOTYPHLA includes the moles (Talpidae), shrews (Soricidae) and hedgehogs (Erinaceidae). Moles and shrews were until recently in the former order Soricomorpha, and many references still use this system. They were grouped in the order Eulipotyphla when it was discovered that shrews and hedgehogs share a more recent common ancestor than do shrews and moles. These families were formerly in a larger order called Insectivora which is no longer used.
