Addictive Behavior: Substance & Process Addictions

  1. What are the most commonly used and abused drugs on college campuses today?
  2. What is the current pattern of drinking on college campuses? What is binge drinking?
  3. What are the behavioral and physiological effects of the most commonly used drugs?
  4. What health risks do the use of smokeless tobacco and cigars pose?
  5. How is addiction defined, and what are the characteristics of addiction?
  6. What are the 5 stages of the addictive process?
  7. What are the 3 models of addiction and how do these models affect how society views addiction?
  8. What is an intervention? What treatment strategies are available to addicts? How can relapse be prevented?

Stress, Illness, and Well-Being

  1. Distinguish between stress as a positive force and as a negative force in your life and in the lives of others. Provide Examples.
  2. Explain the General Adaptation syndrome and the impact of its phases on the body.
  3. Identify and briefly explain 3 factors that increase an individual’s susceptibility to stressors.
  4. Discuss potential actions to control individual responses to stress
  5. Identify and describe the role of selected stress buffers in reducing risk for stress and/or controlling potential harmful effects of chronic stress.

Being Psychologically Well

  1. Define mental, emotional, social, and spiritual health and explain why each of these dimensions health is so important to your overall psychosocial well-being.
  2. Identify and describe a few internal as well as external factors that predispose an individual to psychological wellness or disorder.
  3. Identify and describe 3 common psychological disorders experienced by college students and/or the general population.
  4. Define and distinguish between self-concept, self-esteem, self-efficacy, and locus of control, indicating the importance of each in individual psychosocial health.
  5. Describe 3 steps for enhancing psychosocial well being and achieving optimal wellness throughout the life span.

Introduction to Public Health

  1. In what ways are health and wellness similar? How are they different?
  2. What is the key dimensions of health outlined discussed in class?
  3. What individual, environmental, and social factors may influence the potential for achieving a wellness lifestyle?
  4. In what ways might you benefit from living a comprehensive wellness lifestyle?
  5. What current health-related behaviors would you be most interesting in changing?
