Objectives

  • Define cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, and osteoporosis and describe their prevalence.
  • Identify risk factors for cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, and osteoporosis.
  • Discuss ways to reduce your risk for each.
  • Describe different treatments for each.

Focus Questions

  1. Are women at risk for CAD? Do women who have CAD experience the same signs and symptoms as men?
  2. Should all postmenopausal women be encouraged to go on hormone replacement therapy to protect against osteoporosis as well as CAD? What are the risks involved?
  3. The long-term health care costs for treatment of diabetes and related health care problems are extremely high. How can we better encourage prevention of the disease and early recognition of signs and symptoms?
  4. What current behaviors will affect our likelihood of having chronic disease later in life?
  5. Chronic diseases are still the main causes of death in the United States. Can you make any links between our way of life and our leading causes of death here in the U.S.?

Introduction

Introduction Since the early 1900's, our society has made tremendous strides in conquering childhood diseases. People are living longer and life expectancy has nearly doubled over the last century. Now that we have significantly improved the quantity of life, quality of life has become a focus. Research has consistently shown that lifestyle choices have significant influence on the prevalence of many common chronic diseases. Many of the factors that contribute to chronic diseases are physical in nature, however, a variety of psychological, social and environmental factors also come into play. In this chapter, you will learn about the major chronic diseases affecting us today. In addition, we will also learn how to reduce our risk my making appropriate lifestyle choices.
