Stockers

  • Weaned calf or yearling placed in either a grazing or “backgrounding” scenario
  • Goal is to maximize frame growth economically, not fattening
  • Many weaned calves weigh in the range of 450-550 lbs
    • Most not ready for the feedlot (700-750 lb)

Frame Size

  • Large-frame
    • Choice carcass >1,200 lb
  • Medium-frame
    • Choice carcass 1,000-1,200 lb
  • Small-Frame
    • Choice carcass < 1,000 lb

Maturity

  • As cattle mature
    • Fat deposition increase
    • Protein and water deposition decrease
    • More NEg is need per unit gain
  • As fat deposition increases, grass efficiency and feed conversion decrease
  • Decreased efficiency, additional yardage and interest costs
