  • Nutrients in feed are almost always quoted on a dry matter (DM) basis.
  • Nutrient composition Tables in your text book are on a DM basis or as-fed basis (AF, also known as air dry).
    • DM on Pages 502 - 509 (Cattle, Sheep, & Horses)
    • AF on Pages 512 - 515 (Poultry & Swine)
  • Dry Matter is the portion of the feedstuff that contains the nutrients that we're interested in balancing or formulating for
    • What nutrients are we interested in? All but water
  • Dry Matter is particularly important in balancing rations for ruminants and horses, because these animals typically consume feeds with high moisture content (i.e. grass pasture, corn silage)
