Follow along with the audio...
- Nutrients in feed are almost always quoted on a dry matter (DM) basis.
- Nutrient composition Tables in your text book are on a DM basis or
as-fed basis (AF, also known as air dry).
- DM on Pages 502 - 509 (Cattle, Sheep, & Horses)
- AF on Pages 512 - 515 (Poultry & Swine)
- Dry Matter is the portion of the feedstuff that contains the nutrients
that we're interested in balancing or formulating for
- What nutrients are we interested in? All but water
- Dry Matter is particularly important in balancing rations for ruminants
and horses, because these animals typically consume feeds with high
moisture content (i.e. grass pasture, corn silage)
