Feeding Broilers

  • Most broilers -unlimited access
  • Maximizing nutrient intake not always efficient
  • Decrease growth early in life
  • Restrict feed intake slightly
  • Birds respond to increasing rate of gain later in life
  • Increased efficiency during later stage of production
  • Difference in market weight:
    • Cornish
      • 1 - 1.1 kg live weight at 28 d age
    • Broiler
      • 1.7 to 2.5 kg live weight at 39-42 d age
    • Roaster
      • 3- 4 kg, 50-60 d age
  • Diets
    • Starter
      • Crumbled pellet
      • 0-3 weeks (20-23% CP, 3050 ME kcal/kg)
      • Very rapid growth
      • 45 to 700g in 3 weeks-much of it is protein
