Starting Cattle on Feed
- Starting cattle on feed – the transition between the receiving/growing
diet and the final, high-grain finishing diet
- Received/grown on roughage
- Gradually adjust to high-grain
- Programmed feeding program
- Little or no set-up, quantity offered is gradually increased
Set-up Ration
- Smooth transition that avoids excessive consumption of concentrate > acidosis > decrease feed intake
- Start out at 50:50 and go to 10:90 over several weeks
- Another approach – ad lib intake of a 40:60 starter diet followed by daily substitution of final diet
