  • Also known as soiling or zero grazing

    • Forage cut and chopped in field
    • Transported and fed fresh
    • Primarily fed to confined
    • Harvested and fed once or twice per day

  • Available during forage growing season
  • Examples of forages used include grasses, legumes, and grain forages
  • Nutritional value
    • Stage of maturity at harvest important
    • Compared to pasture, hay, or silage, greatest opportunity to maximize digestible nutrient yield per unit land
    • Minimizes losses in DM, moisture, color, and nutrients
  • Minimizes influence of weather during harvest
  • Daily requirement for labor and equipment
  • In general, supplemented with additional forages, concentrates, minerals, and vitamins
